Hammertoes

Hammertoes and claw toes are foot conditions characterized by an abnormal bending of one or more toes. A hammertoe involves a bend in the middle joint of the toe, while a claw toe involves a bend in the joint closest to the nail. These conditions commonly affect the second, third, and fourth toes. One significant cause is wearing poorly fitting shoes, such as those that are too tight in the toe area or high heels. While the cause is sometimes unknown, injuries or certain diseases, such as diabetes, can also contribute to the development of these conditions.

What Symptoms Are Associated with Hammertoes?

Hammertoes and claw toes typically cause pain and discomfort, especially when wearing shoes. The abnormal bending of the toes can make them difficult to move and may cause stiffness. Redness and swelling are common in the affected area. Additionally, corns and calluses may form as the toes rub against the shoes or the ground. This friction leads to irritation and thickening of the skin, which can exacerbate the discomfort. Without treatment, these symptoms may worsen, making walking and even wearing shoes increasingly difficult.

What Causes Hammertoes?

Hammertoe and claw toe can be caused by various factors. Poorly fitting shoes often play a role, especially high heels or shoes that are too tight in the toe area. These can force the toes into a curled position, even when the shoes are not being worn. Trauma, such as stubbing, pinching, or breaking a toe, can also contribute to the development of hammertoe or claw toe. Additionally, an imbalance in the muscles around the toes can put pressure on the tendons and joints, gradually leading to these deformities over time.

How Do We Treat Hammertoes?

To treat hammer toes, we examine foot alignment and identify pressure points during walking. We design an insole with a small elevation (trip) to encourage a more natural toe position. Additionally, we may use taping or a silicone orthosis to relieve pressure points and reduce pain.
