Sprained Ankle

Ankle pain from a sprain occurs when the ligaments that stabilize the ankle are stretched or damaged. This typically happens when your foot suddenly twists inward or outward, causing swelling and pain in the ankle. Sometimes the damage is limited to a mild strain, but in more severe cases, the ligaments may partially or fully tear. This injury, also known as a sprained ankle, can lead to swelling, bruising, and a feeling of instability in the ankle. While the pain often decreases within a few days, the ankle may remain sensitive and vulnerable for an extended period.

Symptoms of a Sprained Ankle

A sprained ankle typically causes sudden, sharp pain, usually on the outside of the ankle. While the pain may subside relatively quickly, it often lingers when standing or walking. Swelling and bruising can develop within hours as small blood vessels break. Over time, the bruise may spread toward the heel or toes. The ankle may feel unstable, and you might have a sense that it could easily twist again. In more severe cases, walking without support can be challenging, which may suggest a possible fracture.

What Causes a Painful Ankle?

Pain from a sprained ankle typically occurs when the foot lands awkwardly on an uneven surface, such as a pothole or curb. This can cause the ankle to twist, stretching or tearing the ligaments. The risk of spraining an ankle is higher in individuals with balance issues, previous ankle injuries, or those engaging in sports on uneven terrain. Additionally, contact sports like football, volleyball, and basketball increase the risk due to sudden movements and collisions. Regular training on flat surfaces and wearing proper footwear can help reduce the risk of a sprained ankle.

Our Treatment for a Painful Ankle

For recurring ankle sprains, we assess foot stability and mobility. We conduct a gait analysis and use ultrasound to evaluate tissue damage. Strengthening exercises are often needed, and if necessary, we support the ankle with an insole.
