Growth Pain in the Knee

Growth pain in the knee, also known as Osgood-Schlatter, is a common condition among children and adolescents, especially those who are physically active. This condition occurs when the tendon connecting the kneecap to the shinbone becomes overloaded due to repetitive movements and pulling forces. It causes painful swelling just below the knee, where the tendon attaches to the shin. Osgood-Schlatter is typically temporary and usually resolves once growth stops, but it can cause significant pain and discomfort in the meantime, especially during physical activities.

What Symptoms Does Growth Pain in the Knee Cause?

The symptoms often begin with a dull, aching pain just below the kneecap, which worsens during physical activities such as running, jumping, or kneeling. The pain can range from mild to severe and is often accompanied by swelling and tenderness at the point where the patellar tendon attaches to the shinbone. In some cases, a visible bump may form just below the knee, which can be painful to the touch. These symptoms can occur in one or both knees and are typically aggravated during periods of rapid growth or intense physical activity.

What Causes Growth Pain in the Knee?

Osgood-Schlatter is caused by overuse of the patellar tendon during periods of rapid growth, typically in adolescence. During these growth spurts, the bones, muscles, and tendons are still developing, making them more susceptible to injury. This condition is most common in young people who engage in sports that involve running, jumping, or rapid changes in direction, such as soccer, basketball, and track and field. The repeated pulling forces at the point where the tendon attaches to the shinbone can lead to irritation, inflammation, and sometimes even small tears, causing pain and swelling just below the knee.

Our Treatment for Growth Pain in the Knee

For growth-related knee pain, we analyze how foot alignment affects knee stress. Using pressure measurements and gait analysis, we identify areas needing support. A custom insole often helps improve knee positioning and reduce pain.
